whirlwind

life can sometimes be fast and sudden without warning. in the past three weeks:

devin fractured his ankle.
devin started a new job.
we moved to provo.
my parents now live in el salvador.
i had my last day at my job.
and less than a few days til this tyke arrives.

it feels like a tornado whizzed through our little drab life, leaving us both hobbling--literally-- around, doing our best to clean up the aftermath. i do finally feel a little calm, but that could just be the eye of the storm before this babe arrives:) hurrah for memories that are perfect "back when we were young we walked uphill both ways..." grandchildren stories.

aren't all mothers beautiful?

here is a picture of my dazzling mother pregnant with unborn me:) i think she is simply ravishing in this picture. what makes a mother beautiful is all the things, seen and unseen, that she willingly does for her child. i know mothers go through much to have bring a little life into existence and to continue that life on after birth, and my mom was no exception. her heart almost gave out during my pregnancy. i don't think i've quite caught a glimpse of what it means to go through the valley of the shadow of death for someone else, especially when i consider how relatively easy my pregnancy has been compared to what i know others go through. i still can't thank her enough for doing that for me. every day she becomes more and more wise and more and more beautiful. in fact, as i near my own brink of motherhood, i think i could stare at this picture for hours and envision the billions of ways she's given of herself to further my livelihood. what shoes to fill.

oh and read this story someone shared with me because it made me smile.

The Middle Wife
I have been teaching now for about fifteen years. I have two kids myself, but the best birth story I know is the one I saw in my own second grade classroom a few years back.

When I was a kid, I loved show-and-tell. So I always have a few sessions with my students. It helps them get over shyness and usually, show-and-tell is pretty tame. Kids bring in pet turtles, model airplanes, pictures of fish they catch, stuff like that. And I never, ever place any boundaries or limitations on them. If they want to lug it in to school and> talk about it, they are welcome.

Well, one day this little girl, Erica, a very bright, very outgoing kid, takes her turn and waddles up to the front of the class with a pillow stuffed under her sweater.  She holds up a snapshot of an infant. 'This is Luke, my baby brother and I am going to tell you about his birthday.

First, Mom and Dad made him as a symbol of their love and then Dad put a seed in my Mom's stomach and Luke grew in there. He ate for nine months through an umbrella. She is standing there with her hands on the pillow and I am trying not to laugh and wishing I had my camcorder with me. The kids are watching her in amazement.

Then, about two Saturdays ago, my Mom starts saying and going 'Oh, Oh, Oh, Oh!' Erica puts a hand behind her back and groans. 'She walked around the house for, like an hour 'Oh, oh, oh!' (Now this kid is doing a hysterical duck walk and groaning.) My Dad called the middle wife. She delivers babies, but she does not have a sign on the car like the Domino's man. They got my Mom to lie down
in bed like this.' (Then Erica lies down with her back against the wall.) And then, pop! My Mom had this bag of water she kept in there in case he got thirsty, and it just blew up and spilled all over the bed, like psshhheew!' (This kid has her legs spread with her little hands miming water flowing away. It was too much!) Then the middle wife starts saying 'push, push, and 'breathe, breathe.

They started counting but never even got past ten then all of a sudden, out comes my brother. He was covered in yucky stuff that they all said it was from Mom's play-center, (placenta) so there must be a lot of toys inside there. When he got out, the middle wife spanked him for crawling up in there. Then Erica stood up, took a big theatrical bow and returned to her seat. I am sure I applauded the loudest. Ever since then, when it is show-and-tell day, I bring my camcorder, just in case another 'Middle Wife' comes along.

my beloved parents

this year on my birthday i sat for a moment and cried. it was a milestone i proudly (yet barely) passed and my emotions ran high.
today i feel the same emotions running high. it could be because devin just left for a week of scout camp, and i'm never as good without him. or it could be because i'm a hormonal woman with a baby brewing in me. but i think i know the real reason.

on july first my parents will move outside america for three years to serve their God and our church.
they have been called to serve as mission presidents in the el salvador, san salvador mission.

in every way i adore my parents.
as someone on the verge of becoming a parent, i adore them.
imagining leaving my unborn child for three years makes me adore them even more.
knowing they would and will drop their entire lives at a moments notice when a prophet of God calls makes adore them even most.

they are the saints, scriptorians, and support i want someday to be.
and they are here for a brief three weeks more.
i'm one hundred percent certain that our lives will never be the same after this experience in the most positive way possible.

babies

sometimes i think about the power of a little soul and get all giddy inside and my smile creeps out like the sunrise this morning. someone completely unique, who has never lived or breathed and  never can be replicated, is about to come to earth and i'm a part of it. then sometimes i think about my responsibility in that and i want to shudder and crawl back in bed-i'm no wonderwoman. i dunno what i'm doing.
my friend shared with me this quote and i ate it right up. enjoy

"We fancy that God can only manage his world with battalions, when all the while he is doing it by beautiful babies. When a wrong wants righting, or a truth wants preaching, or a continent wants opening-God sends a baby into the world... Perhaps in a simple home and of some obscure mother. And then God puts the idea into the mother's heart, and she puts it into the baby's mind.
And then God waits.
The greatest forces in the world are not the earthquakes and thunderbolts.
The greatest forces in the world are babies."

baby pictures of moi.
pardon the picture-of-a-picture horrendous quality.

showers

if you want to see the good in humanity have a baby--people are soooo generous.
it's sometimes mind blowing and tear jerking. we couldn't be more grateful.
family and friends anyone-THANK YOU.

 our angel mothers

and angel grandmothers.

i am to the point, in the recent while, where i feel huge, no-gigantic, like a whale, beached and barely breathing:) it's awesome.

the pope, jimmer, and les mis

the killpacks treated us to a wonderful evening this weekend.
we went to Buca Di Pepo's for dinner.
get their chicken pesto pizza. it's to die for.

if you can, ask to be seated in the pope room. the lazy susan on the table has the bust of a pope on it that spins with the table as you are getting your food. cool and creepy.
amy and tim make it funny.

jake and lin. she has a baby girl growing due two weeks before our tyke.

curtis and nate.
now for the story of the evening: we were gathered to celebrate curt's birthday. when what to our wondering eyes should appear, but jimmer fredette and his whole family dear.
jake judd, being the brave man he is, yelled, "hey jimmer." to which he politely responded back with a greeting and a wave. i was so bummed, because I wasn't looking as he walked past our table.
later that evening,  daring devin asked jimmer to sign curt's birthday card. in high class style, jimmer totally did, and we all felt one notch happier that night.
end of story.

the night ended with beautiful les miserables at the capital theater. the story is so compelling, and moving. tears were shed. it was a well done production and a perfect evening. thank you killpacks!

a game of bocce ball

we recently went to the living traditions festival in slc. it's a weekend festival full of dancing and music from different ethnicities. we saw some authentic gals in grass skirts, gazed at cool food, and got to play bocce ball. it was harder than it looked.

summer is finally feeling close!

hike adam's canyon

if you live in utah, you should hike adam's canyon before you die.
i'm pregnant and i could do the hike.
it can barely even be called a hike.
it's more like trail walking:)

dev's brother nate came up for the weekend with russo.
at the first sight of good weather we headed for the hike, trail walk.

you can see for miles. and until i moved to davis county and hiked adam's canyon, i never appreciated how big the great salt lake really is. massive.

i love being in nature. like pocahontas i love seeing what's around the river bend. i love the wind and the views. i love feeling completely separated from the cares of life.

we have big hopes of not letting this little guy keep us from roaming the earth this summer. you know, camping and hiking and such. we'll see how that goes.

next hike for the year: timp. i've lived in utah my whole life and never done it. this body post baby is doing it. anybody care to join me?

5.26.2011

today i tried on at least five different outfits before one would finally zip up.

i know not everyone is this way, but i must be grateful.
in general my pregnancy has been fairly easy.
i love that i fall asleep the second my head hits the pillow which is polar opposite of before.
i love when the little tyke gets hiccups.
i love that i feel well enough to do most of my normal routine without discomfort.
i love having extra motivation to eat salads everyday for lunch.
i love the pathetic excuse to eat for two and sometimes i use it.
i love when devin gets a big grin from feeling that babe move like crazy.
i love looking at nursery designs and fantasizing.
i love that i am a part of something miraculous.

few things have been difficult and i can't complain especially when i know how awful some people feel.
but things have been strange, as i go through this complete metamorphis.
it's strange that my tummy feels soooo crammed after a meal.
it's strange when people stare at your tummy. yes, i am pregnant.
it's strange when you get winded from laying on your back for too long, or tying your shoes.
it's strange that i have diapers sitting in my house.
it's strange how quickly it has passed, and how soon it will be through.

51 days to go.

journaling is like losing wieght: unless you see progress it's hard to keep going

today i finished a journal (the old ratty one in the back). this is probably one of my most treasured journals.

every journal is marvelous, but this one is particularly spectacular. i've gone to its pages more humbled in the past seven months than ever before. i've spilled my hopes and dreams, prayers and pleadings, failures and successes, heartaches and joys, and hopefully some of it is descipherable in that special book. hopefully i will glance back every now and then so i don't have to take repeat lessons. hopefully i'm learning something here.
